Greater Omaha Packing Foundation Assists With Funding for Locally Displaced Families
The Greater Omaha Packing Foundation donated $20,000 to support Together Omaha, a local nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing and assisting with homelessness.
Nearly two dozen families were asked to leave their homes in late January due to hazardous code and permit violations. Together Omaha located temporary housing and storage and assisted with their move. When the news broke about the families in crisis, the staff at Greater Omaha Packing were eager to offer assistance.
“We knew this was our call to action and contacted Together Omaha to learn more about their services and how we could help,” Mike Drury, President of Greater Omaha explained. “After talking with Tina Murray, director of Crisis Engagement at Together Omaha, we knew financial support would make the biggest impact.”
“We get some funding from the city as well as other community nonprofits, but we rely mostly on funding from private donors,” Murray says. “Our hope for these families is to locate safe housing, pay their security deposits, and with the generous donation from the Greater Omaha Foundation, their first month’s rent, as well.”
The donation to Together Omaha by the Greater Omaha Packing Foundation is part of a larger effort to support the Omaha region. Since 2002, the meat processor has donated nearly $400,000 in scholarships to dependents of Greater Omaha Packing employees, and in the last year, food donations of more than 16,000 pounds of ground beef were made to Food Bank for the Heartland.
“Community involvement has always been a substantial part of who we are,” shares Henry Davis, CEO of Greater Omaha. “We’ve been a proud employer of our neighbors and community for over a century and consider it an honor to give back where we can.”
